History
Low temperature plasma physics is the driver of plasma
technology which is considered as one of the key technologies of the 21st
century. Due to its central importance in many technologies there is a
large demand of excellently educated plasma scientist worldwide.
Compared to its significance the education in low temperature plasma
physics in Germany
and other European countries is limited to a relatively small number of
universities and institutions.

evening
lecture
In the last decade these research groups located in France, Germany,
Ireland, Italy, Netherlands,
Portugal, Switzerland and United Kingdom
have founded a fruitful cooperation and started a series of annual
European summer schools with extraordinary success. These schools were
organized by
- Daniel C Schram (Center for Plasma
Physics and Radiation Technology CPS, Eindhoven University of
Technology, The Netherlands), 1996-2000
- Marc Böke and Jörg Winter (CoE – Plasma Science and
Technology CPST, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany) 2001-2011
- Richard
Engeln and Richard van de Sanden (Center for Plasma Physics and
Radiation Technology CPS, Eindhoven University of Technology, The
Netherlands), 2006-2011
The purpose of this school is to give new graduate students in
Europe
a solid introduction and concise overview of low temperature plasma
physics and to serve as a forum to provide coherent education in plasma
science. The school has become a genuine part in the curricula of
participating universities. Our experience has shown that contacts
between students and teachers form the basis of enduring interactions.
The emphasis has been on fundamental education and in-depth treatment
of subjects such as plasma sources and production, thermal and low
pressure plasmas, atomic processes, plasma kinetics, diagnostics,
modeling and plasma-surface interactions.

& lecture hall
After the first publication of eight lecture notes in a
special section of Plasma
Sources, Science and Technology (PSST) Vol. 9 (4) in 2000 five
additional notes were published in 2006/2007 (PSST Vol. 15 (2006)
S137- S188 and PSST Vol. 16
(2007) 557-569).
In 2000 the publishing was an experiment in itself and we found out
that the readers of PSST appreciated this type of presentation. From
the schools' point of view, the advantage was twofold: students got to
learn about the journal and the content of the lectures could still be
flexible and changed each year. The hope that the journal could profit
from the information provided and in increasing the community around it
has been fulfilled through the great success of the first publication,
proven e.g by the huge download rates of most of the notes. However,
some aspects could not be treated in the first publication. Now, both
compilations may serve as an introduction to important subjects in
plasma physics to the readers. They will be forwarded to the students
of the 2007 school and might also serve as an introduction to the
schools to come. The forthcoming schools will be held – as in the past
6 years - in the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef in Germany, organized jointly
by CPS and CPST.
We
would like to thank all our colleagues for continuous support and their
willingness to contribute to the school education. Without their
contributions and personal engagement the schools would not have been
possible.
We would like to thank the sponsors of the schools:
- European Community
- WE Heraeus Foundation
- Center for Plasma Physics and Radiation Technology (CPS)
- CoE – Plasma Science and Technology (CPST) of
Ruhr-University Bochum
- Arbeitsgemeinschaft Plasmaphysik APP
- DFG within Research Unit 1123, Collaborative Research Centres SFB-TR 87 & SFB 591, Research Training Group GK 1051
Finally, we would like to thank the members of the local
committees and also the management of the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef.
